Monte Cristi is located on the far north-west tip of the country about 135 km west of Puerto Plata.
It used to be an important trading area in historical times but today most people's income is based on farming, fishing and salt. Tourism has yet to develop substantially.
The municipalities and municipal districts of the province are Castañuela,
Palo Verde,
Guayubín,
Cana Chapetón,
Hatillo Palma,
Villa Elisa, Las Matas de Santa Cruz,
Pepillo Salcedo,
San Fernando de Monte Cristi and
Villa Vásquez.
Tourism has yet to develop substantially but its majestic coastline, in particular, may appeal for a vacation or even for settling down. If property and real estate ownership is in your sights then Monti Cristi might be for you.
